John Macara and
novice co-driver Glenn Martinovich took their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 3 to a
commanding victory at the WA Car Clubs Experts Cup Rally held in the Wellington Dam
area on Saturday 6 July. On the first stage John and Glenn dropped 11 seconds to two other
competitors and from then on set a string of fastest times and one second fastest. John
was very happy with the days competition in the recently overhauled Lancer. John and
Glenn qualified for coveted Experts Cups by setting Top 6 fastest times all through the
event
Brothers Tony and Greg Flood (Subaru Impreza WRX) had been the closest challengers and
looked set to claim second place and Experts Cups until the last stage when a gearbox
problem left them stuck in second gear and they dropped to fourth outright.
Former Australian and Defending State Rally Champions Rob Herridge and Bill Hayes (Subaru
Legacy RS) benefited from the misfortune of others and ended the rally in second place
securing enough points to reclaim the WA Rally Championship. Driving a conservative for
them event Rob and Bill only needed to stay close to the Flood brothers to maintain a
points advantage going into the last round at Harvey on 7 September.
Third place went to the Subaru Impreza WRX of Ross Mackenzie and Paul van der Mey after a
couple of small errors lost them valuable seconds. Paul Feaver and Richard Harris led the
2 wheel drive cars home with a great drive in their Ford Escort RS.
The West Australian Car Club would like to thank the town of Collie for the warm welcome
provided to the organisers and competitors as well as the officials and spectators who
braved a cold and wet night of excellent competition.
